A Stepmother’s Unconditional Love
Much has been written about a mother’s unconditional love. But can the same be said of a stepmother? While many are portrayed as harsh or unkind, the story of Sharifa Khatun proves that love can go beyond blood and become truly selfless.
Sharifa was married at just 12, still a fifth-grade student, to a businessman. After ten years of marriage, her husband tragically died in a road accident. She was only 23, and childless.
Not long after, she received a marriage proposal from a 52-year-old widower. He had two children: a 17-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son who was severely disabled—unable to speak, eat, dress, or use the toilet without assistance.
When asked why she chose this family, Sharifa answered simply: “They were desperate. If I did not care for them, who else would?”
Within a year, the daughter was married. The disabled son—whom Sharifa lovingly calls Babu-shona—was admitted to an NGO-run school. Sharifa also enrolled in the same school, to receive training on how to manage and care for him properly. Side by side, she learned and devoted herself fully to his needs.
Today, Sharifa is 33 and her son is 23. Her greatest dream is that one day he will look at her and call her “mother.” For her, love has no boundaries of age, no limits of condition—only dedication and perseverance.
Sharifa’s story is not only about caregiving. It is about redefining motherhood itself: the courage to love unconditionally, to nurture without expectation, and to turn despair into hope.
Let us all learn to dream, and to love, like Sharifa Khatun.
